PREVENT NCD’S
The human body is designed to keep moving, but in modern society we tend to stay in static postures for extended periods of time – sitting at computers, driving in cars, sitting on the couch watching TV. When this happens stress slowly builds up, especially when the postures we adopt are not ideal. When the body is placed in a non optimal posture, load, even though it is relatively low, is directed through soft tissue rather than the bones of the spine. When this low load is applied over an extended period of time, the soft tissue starts to lengthen, which can often cause pain. Poor postural habits also result in altered muscle function which make it harder to improve posture. This results in a vicious cycle that results in worse posture and a spiral into worsening pain.
The solution to this problem is to firstly identify the poor postural habits and altered muscle function, and instigate specific rehabilitation exercises to improve muscle function. This will often involve both flexibility and strengthening exercise to ensure that you are able to get into correct posture, as well have the strength and control to maintain it.
The second, yet equally important, step in the process is to assess your work station, or where ever you spend a lot of time, and adjust the space to facilitate correct posture. This is called ergonomics. Too often we adjust our body to the environment, we need to adjust the environment to our bodies. No 2 people are exactly the same, therefore there is no “one size fits all” approach to work station set ups, it must be individualised.
The Physios at Physiofit are able to not only provide the rehabilitation program to address your specific postural needs, we are also able to advise on work station set ups to facailitate correct posture and body alignment.
